第5课的“还”（1）表示再加上一个东西或一个动作，意思是“也、另外”：我还想买一个杯子。这一课的“还”（2）放在形容词前面，说的是程度：一、“还＋不错/可以/好”表示“过得去、比较好”，不是非常好，可是也不差；二、“还＋很＋形容词”表示到现在，程度还是那么高，没有变：离机场还很远。
In Lesson 5, 还 (1) adds something more: "also, in addition" (我还想买一个杯子 "I also want to buy a cup"). 还 (2) is different: it sits in front of an adjective and tells you about degree, i.e. how much of a quality there is. (a) 还 + 不错 / 可以 / 好 means "fairly, reasonably, not bad": the speaker is satisfied, but not excited. 还不错 is weaker praise than 很好. (b) 还 + 很 + adjective means the degree is "still" that high and hasn't changed yet: 离机场还很远 "the airport is still a long way off". Quick test: if you can translate 还 as "also / in addition", it is 还 (1). If it describes how good, far, cold... something is, it is 还 (2).
- 这个菜还不错。This dish is pretty good.
- 你的汉语怎么样？——还可以。How is your Chinese? — Not bad.
- 现在离机场还很远。The airport is still a long way from here.
- 九点了，外面还很冷。It's nine o'clock and it's still cold outside.
