“了”放在句子最后，表示情况有了变化，出现了新的情况。“她七岁了”的意思是她以前不是七岁，现在到了七岁。说年龄时常用“……岁了”，问的时候也可以说“几岁了？”“多大了？”。

"了" at the very end of a sentence signals that something has changed — a new situation now holds that didn't before. 她七岁了 means "she's seven now" (she has reached that age). This is why ages are so often said with ……岁了, and asked with 几岁了？ or 多大了？. The same 了 works beyond age: 是学生了 — "is a student now".
